The Mate 40 series is finally announced and it offers a huge camera upgrade over its predecessor. The folks at DxOMark have just posted its review of the new flagship and the Huawei Mate 40 Pro is crowned the new king on its DxOMark Mobile ranking.
For the first time, Huawei is equipping its Mate series with a periscope telephoto camera which gives it a better advantage when it comes to zoom. The device features a 50MP f/1.9 main camera, a 20MP f/1.8 ultra-wide-angle shooter and a 12MP f/3.4 telephoto camera that offers 5x optical zoom. Meanwhile, the “4th camera” is essentially a dedicated depth camera for auto focus.
DxOMark has given the Mate 40 Pro an overall score of 136, which is 3 points higher than the Mi 10 Ultra and 4 points higher than the P40 Pro. Even when it comes to selfie, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro is also ranked #1 with a score of 104, beating the P40 Pro (103) and the ZenFone 7 Pro (101) on DxOMark’s scoreboard.
Despite the lack of OIS for the main camera, DxOMark found that the Mate 40 Pro outperforms the P40 Pro in dynamic range and has good highlight retention for low light scenes. One of the key highlights of the device is its reduced distortion for ultra-wide-angle camera. This provides a better image quality, however, the result is a narrower field of view.
When it comes to zoom, DxOMark says it’s their second-best smartphone camera to date and it offers good levels of detail across all zoom levels. It added that the tele-zoom shots are occasionally out of focus and they hope that this can be solved via a software update.
Huawei isn’t usually great when it comes to videos but DxOMark says that the Mate 40 Pro is the best device they have tested so far for the category. They claim that it offers excellent noise control, effective stabilisation and smooth autofocus. However, when it comes to challenging scenes, it may appear underexposed with limited dynamic range.
Surprisingly, despite having a low pixel count of 13MP for the selfie camera, the Mate 40 Pro manages to score highly for both photo and video categories for the DxOMark selfie tests. They found that the fixed focus camera that sits in the punch hole offers a good wide depth-of-field and good white balance and noise control in low light conditions.
