Spin 513: Acer’s first Snapdragon-powered Chromebook

If you pick up a Chrome OS device today, there is a good chance it is powered by an Intel chip. But Acer is about to buck that trend as it has announced its new Chromebook Spin 513 (CP513-1H) that is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c compute platform.

The new Spin 513 sports a stylish aluminium top cover and weighs less than 1.2kg and measures 15.55mm thick. It features a 13.3” Full HD IPS touchscreen display, with narrow bezels that provide a 78% screen-to-body ratio. The display comes protected by Corning Gorilla Glass that is also said to provide scratch resistance.

The new Chromebook is also a convertible laptop with a 360-degree hinge that allows users to use it either in clamshell, tablet, display or tent mode. For video conferencing or just talking to friends over Google Meet, it has two built-in microphones.

The Spin 513 comes powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Kyro 468 CPU that Acer claims to be sufficient for multitasking while remaining power efficient. The new Spin 513 can also be configured up to 8GB LPDDR4X SDRAM and up to 128GB of eMMC storage. In addition, it comes with integrated Qualcomm Adreno 618 GPU that helps the laptop play some online games.

The Chromebook comes with two USB Type-C ports that support USB 3.2 Gen 1 (up to 5Gbps). Apart from that, you get a DisplayPort over USB-C, and USB charging. You also get a USB 3.2 Type-A port, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.

Acer claims the Chromebook can last up to 14 hours. In addition, it also comes with optional 4G LTE, allowing users to stay connected even without a WiFi connection. In addition, you have the option to equip it with a backlit keyboard, for working in low light environments.

Aside from running apps from the Chrome Web Store, the Chromebook can install and run your favourite Android apps from the Google Play Store.

Pricing and availability

According to Acer, the new Chromebook Spin 513 will be available in North America in February 2021. Prices start at USD 399.99 (RM1,657). There is, however, no word about local availability and pricing.
