U.S. retailer sells Chromecast with Google TV—but it hasn’t even been launched yet

Google is expected to announce the Chromecast with Google TV dongle soon, with a launch expected alongside the upcoming Google Pixel 4A 5G and the Pixel 5. We’ve already seen a slew of leaks which give us a good idea of what to expect—and now, units of Google’s new dongle have inexplicably been spotted on sale at several Home Depot outlets in the U.S.

First spotted on a Reddit thread, the Chromecast with Google TV was purchased by a user for USD 49.99 (~RM208), which tallies with the rumoured price tag of the dongle. In fact, this doesn’t seem to be a one-off, or something that might have been done by mistake. The Verge reports that the new Chromecast can indeed by purchased from the Home Depot, and confirmed this by actually buying a unit.

More than one Home Depot store had the new dongle up for sale, with the device being described on the payment receipt as “SABRINA-ABBEY ROCK CANDY”, the code name associated with it. There are expected to be a trio of colour options, although only Snow has been spotted—white, basically.

As expected, it runs on a redesigned version of Android TV, while 4K is supported, along with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Other possible specs include 8GB of onboard storage with 2GB of RAM, while you’ll get a remote with dedicated buttons for Netflix, YouTube, and Google Assistant.

For some context, this is one of the more anticipated Chromecast dongles of recent years. In essence, the Chromecast with Google TV will give you the full Android TV experience (or, Google TV), as opposed to previous Chromecast sticks that required you to “cast” content from a mobile device. This appears to be an answer to devices like the Amazon Fire TV Stick, as well as the Android TV-based Mi TV Stick.

For now, Google hasn’t officially revealed the product just yet. Perhaps this is part of an elaborate marketing gimmick, or perhaps someone missed an important memo. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement from Google, expected any day now.
