[ UPDATE 28/08/2020 20:15 ]: RMCO has been extended until 31st December 2020. More details here.

===

With less than 4 days remaining in the current Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will be addressing the nation this evening to provide an update on the Movement Control Order. Malaysia has been placed under MCO for 164 days since the 18th of March 2020.

You can watch the announcement at 8.00pm this evening (28th August) across multiple platforms including RTMBernama TVTV3 and Astro Awani

The current RMCO which took effect from 10th June had allowed more business sectors to reopen and Malaysians are permitted to travel interstate without applying for a permit. Schools have reopened and domestic tourism players have also resumed their business activities. However, strict SOP is still in place and international travel is still not allowed to curb the spread of infection.

Although Malaysia has been recording fewer daily cases, we are still not out of the woods yet. The Ministry of Health has recommended a further extension of the current RMCO citing WHO’s expectation that the COVID-19 pandemic could last for another 2 years.

Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has also urged the government to tighten entry into Malaysia as there has been an increase in imported cases. He pointed out that countries such as South Korea which was deemed to be among the countries to have better control of the situation had recorded 2,600 cases in 10 days.

As of yesterday, Malaysia has a total of 9,296 COVID-19 cases and 125 deaths. There are 177 active cases remaining with 8 patients in ICU and a total of 8,994 patients have recovered and discharged so far. There were no new positive cases reported from the Sivagangga and Tawar clusters yesterday.
