Pre-orders for the fully electric Mini Cooper SE open in Malaysia for less than RM230k

A year ago, Mini rolled out the Mini Cooper SE as the company’s first ever mass-produced all-electric vehicle. Based on the F56 Mini 3-door hatch, the electric Mini takes its place alongside the BMW i3—with whom the Mini Cooper SE shares its electric powertrain—in the company’s Malaysian EV range

Also known as the Mini Electric, the 2020 Mini Cooper SE is set to launch in Malaysia on the 26th of August 2020. Pre-orders in Malaysia are now open, with the “estimated price” being set at RM22X,XXX (SST not included). Three colours are available: White Silver, Chili Red, and British Racing Green, and a booking fee of RM1,000 is required to pre-order the Cooper SE.

This means that the Mini Cooper SE will be priced at below RM230,000, which means that the BMW i3 is around RM40,000 more. According to Paultan, this price difference is reflected in the German market, with the i3’s use of a carbon-fibre chassis and carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) body being one of the reasons for the higher cost.

So, what are you getting for RM230,000 or so? For one, the electric motor has an output of 184hp and 270Nm of torque, with a 0–60km/h time of 3.9 seconds and a 0–100km/h time of 7.3 seconds. The top speed is limited to 150km/h, although we can’t confirm if the same limiter will be implemented in the Malaysian release just yet.

A 32.6kWh lithium-ion battery has a rated range of up to 270km on a full charge, while you can charge the Cooper SE’s battery via a public charging station (which you can find in various spots around town such as shopping malls), or even a household socket or wall box. A full charge should take you around four hours with a single-phase AC outlet, although a 11kW wall charger can juice up your electric Mini in up to three hours. If you’re really in a rush, the Mini Cooper SE supports 50kW fast DC charging—0-80 percent in 35 minutes.
