COVID-19: New cases jump to 23 today, 10 are reported in Johor

Malaysia has recorded 23 new COVID-19 cases today which brings the total number of infections to 8,884. Fortunately, there are no new deaths reported today and the death toll remains at 123 for 6 days straight.

The Ministry of Health has reported 17 new recoveries and a total of 8,594 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is currently 96.74% while the mortality rate is 1.38%.

There are currently 167 active cases remaining which are still receiving treatment. 3 patients are in ICU while 2 require respiratory support.

Out of the 23 cases today, 17 are transmitted locally while 6 are imported. The imported cases consist of 3 Malaysians returning from Singapore and 1 Malaysian returning from Indonesia. There’s one foreigner each returning from Russia and the Philippines.

In terms of local transmissions, there are 8 new cases in Sarawak which are all Malaysians, followed by 6 cases in Johor which consists of 2 Malaysians and 4 foreigners. There are 2 cases involving foreigners in Selangor and 1 case which is also a foreigner in Kuala Lumpur.

Johor recorded the most number of cases today with 10 infections (6 local + 4 imported) followed by Sarawak with 8 local cases. The Ministry has also identified 2 new clusters – Bukit Tiram in Johor and a Kuching construction company in Sarawak.

Today records the highest number of new daily cases since 16th June 2020. The Ministry of Health has tested 932,397 individuals so far and the positive rate is 0.95%.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has said today that the government has agreed to tighten SOP of the movement control order that was eased during the RMCO period. The decision was agreed upon at a special ministerial meeting on the implementation of the MCO. The technical committee will meet tomorrow to work on the finer details of the SOP and it will be tabled at a meeting on Monday.
