Corning has introduced the Gorilla Glass Victus which claims to offer significant improvement for both drop and scratch performance. Although it succeeds Gorilla Glass 6, they are calling it Victus instead of Gorilla Glass 7.

According to Corning, Victus can survive drops onto rough surfaces from a height of up to 2 metres. This is a 25% improvement over Gorilla Glass 6 which can withstand drops from heights up to 1.6 metres. According to Corning, the new glass provides better survivability than competitive aluminosilicate glasses which typical fails when dropped from less than 0.8 metres.

Corning has also increased its glass resistance to scratch and sharp contact damage. On competitive glass, the typical threshold is 2-4 Newtons. With the Victus, the scratch threshold is much higher at 7-10 Newtons which is up to 4x better.

After a glass is scratched, Corning has also performed additional tests to determine its durability. The test combo allows them to find out how much force is needed to scratch the glass, followed by how much force is needed to break it. From their findings, Gorilla Glass Victus could still manage to withstand loads of over 100kgf while its competitive glass breaks with 15.5 kgf of load.

Corning has confirmed that Samsung will be their first customer to use Gorilla Glass Victus in the near future. Based on the recent leaks, this is highly likely to be offered on the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra that’s launching on the 5th of August 2020.
