5,000 CCTV cameras to be installed in Kuala Lumpur to improve safety

According to Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa, up to 5,000 CCTV cameras will be installed at strategic spots in Kuala Lumpur. This is to create a safer and conducive environment for shopping at the federal capital.

He had instructed the Ministry to request Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to work with the private sector for the installation of the CCTV cameras. The Minister said this during the launch of the Mega Sales Program and Buy Malaysian Products Campaign at Suria KLCC last weekend.

As reported by Sinar Harian, Annuar said that there are currently hundreds of CCTV cameras that are operational in Kuala Lumpur in partnership with the Royal Malaysia Police. The authorities are also discussing with the KL police chief on joint measures to increase levels of security at the nation’s capital. The CCTV cameras will not only be installed at buildings but also surrounding areas to increase surveillance.

Mass surveillance can be implemented effectively with 5G which is expected to roll out in Malaysia sometime in 2020. 5G can provide low-latency, high-capacity and high-data transfer rates which would enable real-time video feed in 4K resolution or higher.

During the 5G Demonstration projects, TM and Celcom have deployed smart city solutions in Langkawi which aimed at creating a safer environment for both locals and tourists. With the use of artificial intelligence, authorities can be alerted of suspicious activities and facial recognition could be used to help identify suspects.
