At long last, Dark Mode for Facebook is coming to mobile users soon

Finally. Facebook has reportedly confirmed that Dark Mode is currently being tested for certain users, with users first spotting the “feature” sitting within Settings & Privacy on the mobile app. However, it’s worth noting that this isn’t an official rollout, with Facebook saying that Dark Mode is only available to “a small percentage of users globally” at present.

This has certainly been a long time coming, and Dark Mode is something that is already available on many popular apps. Facebook, for their part, have already implemented dark themes across other apps in their ecosystem, including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Plus, the Facebook also announced Dark Mode for their desktop interface as part of a recent redesign.

Perhaps the delay for the mobile app can be explained by the complexities associated with the platform—for one, there are various facets of the Facebook app that cater to different types of users, including businesses and publishers. This, in theory, would render the task of creating a dark mode for the Facebook app as a more difficult task.

Still, considering the widespread use of Facebook around the world, as well as the popularity of dark mode in general, this has been a significant delay. Dark mode, after all, has its benefits. Besides the aesthetic appeal, dark mode can also reduce battery usage on a device, particularly for devices that utilise AMOLED displays.

For what it’s worth, I’ve checked the Facebook app on both Android and iOS devices, and we have yet to receive the update. If you want to see if you fall within the “small percentage” of global users, open your Facebook app, and head over to Settings & Privacy. If you’re a part of the test, you’ll see a new “Dark Mode” setting near the bottom of the list.

Even if you aren’t one of the lucky few, this should mean that Dark Mode will be arriving at some point—and sooner, rather than later.
