TNB: More than 80% of home users get 15-50% discount on electricity bill for 6 months

According to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), more than 80% of residential users will receive discounts between 15% to 50% on electricity usage with a maximum limit of 600kWh per month between 1st April to 30th September 2020.

This was revealed by TNB Chief Retail Officer, Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan and he shared that 6.3 million B40 and M40 residents will benefit from the discounted rate introduced under the PRIHATIN initiative. TNB currently has 7.5 million users from its residential segment.

With the PRIHATIN initiative, the government has allocated RM530 million for the power utility company to offer discounts for electricity bills up to 50%. For usage up to 200kWh, users can get 50% off, while usage between 201-300kWh will get a 25% discount. Meanwhile, usage between 301-600kWh will enjoy a 15% discount and users that consume more than 600kWh will get a 2% discount.

To ease the burden of consumers, all customers are offered an Easy Payment Plan (EPP) which will allow them to pay the outstanding amount of their electricity bills in monthly instalments until 31st December 2020. The monthly instalment amount will be shown in the yellow box located at the top right corner of the bill. TNB will also waive all late payment charges until 30th September 2020 and they won’t be conducting power disconnection activities until 31st July 2020.

Recently, TNB’s new Chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid had said that higher electricity bills were due to Malaysians spending more time at home. Children not going to school and more people working from home is said to be a direct cause of an increase in the usage of electricity. It was shared that there’s an increase in usage between 20-50% for residential users.

TNB insists that it does not overcharge users as it uses a pro-rated billing method for its electricity bills. The pro-rated calculation ensures that the total power utilisation is divided by the number of months and it will then multiply the existing tariff block according to the individual month usage.
