Vivo X50 series: This phone comes with a gimbal-like camera stabilisation system

Vivo has officially announced its new top-of-the-line X50 series smartphones: the X50, X50 Pro and X50 Pro+. All of the phones in the X50 series are said to be 5G-ready smartphones. What distinguishes them is the new X50 Pro and X50 Pro+ boast new enhanced photographic capabilities while the X50 is touted to be the slimmest 5G phone made to date.

Vivo had previously showed off the features of the X50 in its Apex 2020 concept phone but the company was not able to show off the phone due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Vivo X50

The X50 sports a 6.56″ AMOLED display with a Full HD+ (2376 x 1080 pixels) resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. A small 32MP punch-hole camera on the top left corner of the screen for taking selfies and unlocking the phone.

Measuring at just 7.49mm, the X50’s extremely slim profile makes it the thinnest 5G phone to date. It comes powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset complemented by 8GB of RAM. Storage wise, it comes with either 128GB or 256GB of fast Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.1. Apart from that, the phone has a 4,200mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging.

Turn the phone around and you will be greeted by a quad-camera array. The main camera is a 48MP shooter with an aperture of f/1.6 and an Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) system. Admittedly, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, such as the gimbal-like stabilisation system, like its higher-end cousins. It is complemented by a 13MP portrait camera that offers a 2x optical zoom, 8MP ultra-wide camera and 5MP macro camera. In terms of colours, it comes in black, blue or pink.

Vivo X50 Pro

The X50 Pro has a 6.56″ curved AMOLED display (FHD+) with a 90Hz refresh rate. It also has an in-display fingerprint sensor and a 32MP punch-hole camera tucked in the top left corner.

Like the X50, it uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset and it is supported with 8GB of RAM. Similarly, it comes with either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage. A slightly larger 4,315mAh battery helps it get through the day. It also supports 33W fast charging for that quick recharge in the middle of the day.

The X50 Pro’s headline feature is its main 48MP Sony IMX598 sensor camera that uses a new gimbal-like stabilisation system. This new system is said to aid users capture steady movement shots thanks to its anti-shake feature. In addition, Vivo claims the camera’s motion detecting algorithm helps it track moving subjects and keep them in focus.

Apparently, this gimbal-like system is claimed to be 200% better than a regular optical image stabilisation system (OIS). Vivo seems quite confident in its claims as it pitted the gimabl-system in action against a phone with OIS and the resulting video appeared super steady shot even as both phones were shaken.

The three other cameras found on the X50 Pro include an 8MP periscope camera that offers 5x optical zoom, a 13MP portrait camera with 2x optical zoom and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. It is available in dark blue and light blue.

Vivo X50 Pro+

The X50 Pro+ features a 6.56″ AMOLED display (FHD+) and boasts a high 120Hz refresh rate. It is powered by a Qualcomm 865 chipset with a choice between 12GB or 8GB of RAM. You get a choice of either 128GB or 256GB of UFS storage (there is no word whether this is UFS 2.1 or UFS 3.0, but we will update once it is confirmed).

The phone will use Samsung’s new 50MP image sensor called ISOCELL GN1 that uses large 1.2μm-sized pixels. Vivo claims the camera delivers DSLR-level auto-focus speeds as well as excelling at snapping low-light photos. Just like the X50 Pro, it employs a gimbal-system to give it an edge in video recording. (Correction: The X50+ Pro’s main camera does not use the gimbal-system)

Apart from the main camera, you also get an 8MP periscope camera that has an f/3.0 lens and offers 5x optical zoom and is capable of 60x hybrid zoom with its Hyper Zoom feature.

There is also an 8MP ultra-wide camera that lets you capture 120-degree images. It also doubles as a macro camera for capturing detailed photos as close as 2.5cm from the subject.

The fourth camera is a 13MP f/2.5 portrait camera that offers a 2x optical zoom. This camera will allow budding mobile photographers the ability to isolate their subjects from the background.

Apart from that it packs a 4,315mAh battery with support for 44W fast charging. In terms of colours it is available in either blue or brown.
