Leak: Sony WH-1000XM4 to have multi device support, upgraded features

The Sony WH-1000XM3 are some of the best headphones around, with the combination of long battery life, great Active Noise Cancelling technology, and good audio quality meaning that it has been the choice of headphones for many of us in the SoyaCincau office. Which is why we’ve been looking forward to the next iteration in the WH series for some time now—in fact, the Sony WH-1000XM4 has already passed SIRIM certification in Malaysia.

Back in March, images of the WH-1000XM4 were leaked in a Tweet by Mishaal Rahman, revealing that… well, that they look practically identical to the current Sony WH-1000XM3. The model was confirmed to have been certified by Anatel in Brazil, which is an agency that regulates these products in the South American country.

Now, more leaks have surfaced that reveal some purported specs of the upcoming headphones. The information was gleaned from a breakdown of the Sony Headphones Connect app APK, with a couple of interesting new updates to come.

Among them is the addition of multi point connection support, which is certainly something that people have been asking for on the Sony WH-1000XM3. Basically, users will be able to connect up to two devices to the Sony WH-1000XM4, and switch between the two without actually having to disconnect from each device first.

This was something that was rather cumbersome to do on the XM3, with users having to manually disconnect each device before reconnecting to a second device. In fact, I regularly turn off the Bluetooth on a primary device to ensure that I don’t run into issues connecting my WH-1000XM3 to a second device.

The caveat to it is that Sony’s high-quality LDAC Bluetooth features will not work with the multi point feature turned on. Still, audiophiles can use the LDAC codec if the feature is disabled.

Something else that is pretty interesting is that the Sony WH-1000XM4 could have a feature called “Smart Talking”. As perhaps is obvious by its name, this feature automatically turns on the “Ambient Mode” when it detects that the wearer is speaking. After a period of time, the headphones reverts back to noise cancelling mode (or whichever default mode).

Finally, we could also see an upgrade to Sony’s DSEE HX technology, which basically upscales compressed audio to “near high-resolution sound quality”. The WH-1000XM4 could be coming with DSEE Extreme, which will feature AI integration to possibly offer even better audio upscaling.

Unfortunately, there is still (I know, we’re impatient too) no information on when Sony plans to release the WH-1000XM4. However, given that the model has passed through Brazilian and Malaysian regulatory agencies, we do expect it to arrive—at some point.
