Guess what the most popular hashtag on Instagram is this Raya

It’s a given that the longer we are needed to stay at home during MCO, the more likely it is for us to go down a social media hole. As we end Ramadhan month and await Eid, social distancing continues and people are continuing the traditions of breakfasting via social media more often.

More than 2 million people in Malaysia made posts and comments on Facebook about breakfasting in the month of Ramadan so far, according to Facebook‘s press release. For the topic of Raya, there were 1 million people who’ve made posts and comments about the celebration on the social media platform since the beginning of Ramadan.

Here are the top 10 hashtags on Facebook and Instagram in preparation for Raya in Malaysia:

  • #minikurung
  • #bajuraya2020
  • #bajukurung
  • #raya2020
  • #bajumelayu
  • #stayathome
  • #bajukurungraya
  • #bajukurungmoden
  • #bajurayasedondon
  • #kitajagakita

It seems that even though we aren’t going anywhere to ‘beraya’ as usual, hashtags that are related to ‘baju raya’ are still very popular and has taken over 7/10 of the top 10 hashtags. People are still looking for ideas for ‘baju raya’ on social media.

I had no idea what the top hashtag meant (#minikurung) so I did a little digging on Instagram. I thought it had something to do with ‘baju kurung’ for kids, but it was actually a type of modern traditional wear where the hem of the top is shorter than usual. The hashtag currently has 1.3 million posts on Instagram.

“Being Malaysians, we love our food, which is why posts on food and beverages such as ketupat, rendang, bandung, soya cincau, kuih ros, ayam percik contributed to these conversations. Another topic that also contributed to these conversations were about fashion, such as traditional Malay outfits like baju melayu and baju kurung for Eid,” wrote Facebook in their press release.

Hopefully, the ‘soya cincau’ they mentioned that contributed to Facebook’s data also had to do with us.
