After announcing a Lego series featuring Nintendo’s most famous Italian plumber in March, Nintendo released a closer look at the at Lego Super Mario! sets with a YouTube video, and announced the release date for the sets, which will be out on the 1st August. However, at the time of writing, the pre-order units have already sold out.

Lego Group’s Lead Designer, Jonathan Bennink showcased the details on the actual sets and how the interactive video-game-in-real-life elements will work. The Mario Starter Course includes an interactive, Bluetooth-enabled Mario figure. The Bluetooth feature helps Mario interact with special Lego ‘action bricks’ so that you can collect ‘coins’ as you go.

The figure also features LCD displays on Mario’s eyes, mouth, and stomach to display reactions and gameplay elements, and a speaker for music and sound effects. There are also sensors to detect colour and movement.

Besides the Starter Course set, there are two Expansion Sets (just like added levels in a Super Mario video game). The first is a Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set, which includes Piranha Plants and a Koopa Troopa.

The second is the Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set, which features, well, Bowser himself.

The Lego Mario Starter Course costs USD 59.99 (RM260), the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set costs USD 29.99 (RM130) and Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set, which is the biggest of the three sets, costs USD 100 (RM434).

“Due to your overwhelming excitement for LEGO Super Mario, we are no longer taking pre-orders at this time,” writes Lego. Despite the pre-orders currently being sold out, you may still add the sets in your wishlist in the U.S. Lego Store.
