Celcom has finally switched on Voice over LTE (VoLTE) on its 4G network. It enables high-definition voice calls and it also ensures that your phone stays on 4G even when you’re on a call.
At the moment, the VoLTE feature is only available for postpaid customers and with the following iPhone models:
To activate it, go to your iPhone’s Settings > Mobile Data > Voice and Data and select 4G, VoLTE On. Be sure that your iPhone is updated to the latest iOS 13.3. For Android users, it isn’t available just yet and it is likely to be enabled later this year.
With VoLTE, Celcom is a step closer in terms of 5G readiness. This allows voice calls to be handled by an IP network which offers quicker call connection thanks to lower latency and you’ll also get higher audio quality. Without VoLTE, your device has to switch to 3G for calls which makes your phone’s connection slower. This can be very annoying especially when you’re using your phone as a hotspot.
According to Celcom, you can find out if VoLTE is available by going into Settings > General > About > Network Provider – Celcom 40.2. If it is showing IMS Status – Voice & SMS when you tap on Network Provider, that means VoLTE is available. Alternatively, you will also know if VoLTE is enabled if you make a voice call and your iPhone doesn’t switch from 4G to 3G.
VoLTE is offered free of charge and you still enjoy the same voice call minutes and rates as before. Since it runs on 4G, the feature is only available when you’re within Celcom’s 4G coverage.
Yes is the first telco in Malaysia to VoLTE and it’s also available on Digi, U Mobile and Unifi Mobile. Maxis has told us that they will be enabling VoLTE sometime in 2020.
