Here’s a clear look at the Huawei P40 prototype

The Huawei P40 series will be announced very soon and this is the Chinese smartphone maker’s photography-centric flagship for 2020. The folks at Digital Trends have managed to get a hands-on of an early prototype unit which provides a glimpse of what to expect from the new device.

The prototype was shared by a Huawei employee when Digital Trends had a hands-on session with the foldable Mate Xs. They were not able to take a picture of the front, use the software or try the camera, but at least they get a feel of its overall size and build quality.

Like most prototypes from Huawei and Honor, you won’t find any actual branding on the device. Instead of “Huawei” and “Leica” at the rear, it has “POLARIE” and “BLINK” labels to confuse prying eyes.

They added that the design isn’t the same as the final unit and it certainly looks different from the leaked renders by @evleaks. However, the camera position especially the square periscope lens seems to imply that is a P40 Pro underneath its deceptive body. For 2020, Huawei is expected to release two Pro variants and the highest Premium Edition is expected to feature a Penta-camera setup.

According to the site, the device has more rounded edges and corners, making it less sharp than the P30 Pro and the Mate 30 Pro. The rear also retains a clean flat appearance while the sides still get a traditional volume rocker and power button combo. As expected, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack and all you get is a USB-C port at the bottom.

Digital Trends added that the device feels a little thicker than the P30 Pro, so you can probably expect a bigger battery, possibly more than 4,200mAh. Under the hood, the device is set to run on the latest Kirin 990 5G chipset that’s powering the current Mate 30 Pro 5G and the Mate Xs. Due to the current restrictions by the US government, the new P40 series will be shipped with Huawei Mobile Services.

As announced by Richard Yu during the recent global launch event, the Huawei P40 series will be revealed in Paris on the 26th March 2020. Since Malaysia is a key market, you can expect the device to be launched in Malaysia very soon. Before that, the Huawei Mate Xs is expected to go on sale in Malaysia from the 20th March 2020.
