Digi’s updated postpaid plans inspire concern, here’s what you need to know

[ UPDATE 30/12/2019 12:00pm ] Digi has clarified that you are able to get up to 70GB a month on its Digi Postpaid 80 plan. The Welcome and Loyalty bonuses are given on a monthly basis and they are stackable. More details here.

======

Digi has announced a revision for its postpaid plans for 2020. Moving forward, the yellow telco offers all-day all-usage internet across its plans which provides subscribers full access to their allocated data at any time. That means no more annoying split between weekday and weekend data.

While the postpaid subscription remains unchanged, there are a couple of changes that you would need to know.

Digi Postpaid 80 is probably their best sweet-spot when it comes to their postpaid offering. Previously, for RM80/month you get 10GB for weekend data and 10GB for weekday data along with unlimited calls and 300 SMS. Now for the same subscription fee, you can get 30GB of base data (50% more) which you can use 7 days a week.

To make the deal sweeter, the Postpaid 80 plan comes with a Welcome Bonus of 10GB of data and a Loyalty Bonus where you get 40GB for the first two years. Take note that the Loyalty bonus isn’t a monthly perk and you’re getting 10GB every 6 months during your first 2 years of subscription.

For Digi Postpaid 120, the data quota has also increased from 40GB previously to 50GB. Like before, the plan doesn’t come with weekday/weekend quota split. The rest of the plans appear to remain unchanged except for the entry-level Jom Start.

At RM58/month, you can 10GB of all-day quota which is better than the previous 5GB weekday + 5GB weekend data split. The plan still comes with unlimited calls to all networks.

Despite being the cheapest plan, Digi is also rewarding its subscribers with a 20GB loyalty bonus. Take note that this is 20GB which will be distributed during the 2 year period. According to the fine print, you’ll receive 5GB every 6 months.

If you look from the surface, it looks like the Postpaid 80 is getting lots of perks and bonuses compared to the previous iteration. But when you compare the old and new plans side by side, you’ll notice that it is missing the free 30GB of YouTube quota each month. Despite the data split for the base plan, you’re getting a total of 50GB of usable internet each month on the older version.

With the updated Postpaid 80 for 2020, you’re getting just 30GB each month plus a couple of free short term data during the first two years. Even if you calculate the total bonuses (10GB welcome + 40GB loyalty) and divide them across 24 months, you’re getting an average of 2.08GB extra each month.

If you’re an existing Digi user that spends a lot of data on YouTube, the older plan with 30GB YouTube data is actually more worth it. If you use more data for everything else, the new plan is a better all-rounder as you’re getting 50% extra data for the base plan which you can use at any day of the week.

Digi Postpaid 120

For Digi Postpaid 120, it is a no brainer as the new plan gives you 10GB more data than before and the rest of the plan offering remains unchanged. You still get unlimited calls and 1,000 SMS each month which you can use on all networks.

Digi’s included Borderless Roaming plan which lets you roam in 10 countries is still retained. This lets you enjoy 5GB of data roaming and 60 minutes of voice calls each month.

Postpaid 160 and 190

For Digi Postpaid 160 and 190, it looks like nothing has changed. It still comes with 70GB and 100GB of data respectively with unlimited calls and 100 SMS. You also get borderless roaming for free. Strangely, Digi does not offer loyalty bonuses for the Postpaid 120, 160 and 190 plan.

Do note that the entitlements for the Digi postpaid plans may change if you opt for a device bundling especially on PhoneFreedom 365. Usually, on a phone contract, you can get an extra 50GB to 100GB of extra data each month depending on the device offers available.

According to Digi, all existing postpaid customers who are already on the selected plans will enjoy the upgraded internet quota and bonuses automatically in the next billing cycle. They added that Digi’s long tenure internet plans customers will also be upgraded in stages before the end of January 2020.
