Celcom deploys 5G-connected 360° 4K CCTV system in Langkawi

Celcom in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and Langkawi Municipal Council (MPLBP) has deployed a 5G Safety & Security Smart City system on the island of Langkawi. According to the telco, the system offers a breakthrough in security and monitoring effectiveness and it utilises multiple 360° UHD 4K panoramic surveillance cameras.

The system is currently deployed at four locations along Jalan Pantai Cenang and two locations at Dataran Cenang, Langkawi. The 5G Safety & Security Smart City solution uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and video analytics capabilities that leverage on 5G’s low latency and high data speeds to enable real-time monitoring and high definition picture quality.

The demonstration of the smart city solution was witnessed by MCMC Chairman, Al-Ishsal Ishak together with Celcom’s Chief Strategy and Value Creation Officer, Muniff Kamaruddin and representatives of PDRM and MPLPB at the Langkawi Police District Headquarters in Kuah. Celcom’s 5G use cases will be expanded to cover Digital Defense for Beach Boundaries, Crowd Control Monitoring, Digital Control of Inbound and Outbound of Cargo, Fleet Management System, Geo-Fencing & Smart Perimeters and 5G Fixed Wireless Access.

Celcom claims that their 5G network in Langkawi can deliver user throughputs close to 1.5Gbps with a latency of 16ms. Its setup in Langkawi applies 5G New Radio technology on the C-band spectrum with MIMO 64T64R, delivered through a 5G Customer Premise Equipment (CPE).

Commenting on the collaboration, Celcom CEO, Idham Nawawi said “Celcom’s collaboration with PDRM and MPLPB in Langkawi will allow us to create safer and more secure cities through the adoption of 5G technology. Our 5G Safety & Security Smart City solution enables an enhanced security monitoring system for enforcement units as well as transforms the island of Langkawi into a more secure destination.”
