[ UPDATE 16/12/2019 14:00 ] Samsung now denies selling one million Galaxy Fold units.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold is a foldable smartphone like no other. Despite months of delays and its RM8,388 price tag, the Korean smartphone maker still manages to sell a million units worldwide.
This was revealed by Samsung Electronics President, Young Sohn, during TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin and it’s double of the 500,000 sales estimate from October. He said “and I think that the point is, we’re selling [a] million of these products. There’s a million people that want to use this product at USD 2,000.”
Sohn had commented on the sales figures while he explained Samsung’s process of releasing products to get feedback. He shared that if they kept devices like the Galaxy Fold in the labs, they wouldn’t get the input they needed.
When asked if Samsung is comfortable selling a USD 2,000 “beta” device, he said yes and cited the sales number as justification.
It was previously reported that Samsung plans to sell 6 million foldable smartphones in 2020. At a recent Samsung Developer Conference event, Samsung had teased a new foldable concept that looks like the new reborn Motorola Razr.
The Galaxy Fold was first introduced before MWC 2019 but the device had suffered a number of issues with its first batch of review units. Samsung had to delay its commercial release until September after making the necessary design fixes to improve the durability of the foldable display and hinge mechanism.
The Galaxy Fold went on sale in Malaysia on 16 October 2019 and the first pre-order units were sold out within 24 hours. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check out our unboxing and hands-on of the converged smartphone and tablet device.
