Most users—at least those of us who use Android devices—store our images and videos on Google Photos. and the unlimited storage (at a reduced quality) of images is a godsend for those of us who take huge amounts of photos. With that in mind, Facebook is now rolling out a new tool that will allow users of its platform to directly export photos from Facebook to Google Photos.
This is part of the Data Transfer Project that Facebook has been working on since 2018, which is a collaboration with Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter to build a cross-platform method to share data. Based on an open source framework, the first fruit to be reaped from this collaborative effort is the ability to export photos from Facebook to Google Photos.
Facebook says that they’ve spend the past year laying the foundation for this new tool, with “security and reliability” assured during initial stages. And as a safeguard, transfers will only be created by the owner of the account—this will be verified by a requirement for people to reenter their password before a transfer. An email is also sent to the registered account once a transfer has begun, which gives account owners a brief period to halt the transfer.
The new tool could certainly be useful, especially for users who don’t automatically backup photos from their smartphones. In addition to that, photos that are uploaded to Facebook from other sources, such as laptops or even cameras, can now be transferred to Google Photos easily. In my mind, this opens up a myriad of transfer options, given that Google Photos is accessible on almost every OS and platform.
The tool is currently rolling out in Ireland, and it will be available worldwide in “early 2020”.
