U Mobile has signed a Letter of Intent with Huawei Technologies to explore 5G collaborations. The signing which took place at Huawei Headquarters in Dongguan, China is in line with the telco’s 5G strategy which is expected to be rolled out next year when the regulatory perimeters have been defined.
The collaboration between U Mobile and Huawei will include 5G live trials that will be conducted in Malaysia very soon. According to U Mobile CEO, Wong Heang Tuck, “U Mobile is delighted to collaborate with our longstanding partner Huawei Malaysia as part of our Road To 5G Strategy. As we are prepping for 5G rollout next year, we are looking forward to working together with Huawei Malaysia to carry out 5G live trials soon.”
Commenting on the signing, Huawei Malaysia CEO, Michael Yuan said, “We are privileged to work hand in hand with U Mobile to explore Huawei 5G technology leadership on Gigabit speeds, ultra-low latency and massive communications network in Malaysia. We are looking forward to growing together as the technology enabler and leader in 5G service innovation.”
From October 2019 to March 2020, there will be 5G demonstrations taking place in 32 live sites across 6 states in West Malaysia. U Mobile is also participating in the live demo and they will be performing trials for digital healthcare and smart city use cases.
The MCMC aims to finalise its decision and will allocate the 5G spectrum via multiple methods by Q2 2020. The spectrum is expected to be commercially available in the 2nd half of 2020.
