Apple displays Malaysia flag emoji incorrectly on iOS 13.1 and 13.1.1

Apple has been making some significant progress in Malaysia. Apart from lowering the pricing for its iPhone 11 series across the board, we also get it much earlier, just a week after Singapore. However, when it comes to our flag, an eagle-eyed user has noticed something different with our Jalur Gemilang on the latest iOS update.

Hafifi Hafidz noticed that the current Flag of Malaysia emoji had gotten the position of the red and white stripes wrong. The blue quarter that contains the moon and the 14-pointed star should extend from the 1st to the 8th stripe. However, on iOS 13.1, this has extended all the way to the 9th stripe.

He had tweeted the issue to Apple CEO, Tim Cook, and has also tagged Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Mahathir. In addition, he has also filed an official iOS report to Apple.

We can confirm that the wrong emoji flag was shown on iOS 13.1 and 13.1.1. This isn’t a problem on iOS 13.0 and you can check out the comparison below:

Left: iOS 13.0, Right: iOS 13.1

According to Emojipedia’s changelog for iOS 13.1, the “Flag for Malaysia” is among 24 emojis that were updated. Other changed emojis include the “Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes”, Octopus, Squid, Mosquito, Jigsaw piece, and abacus. Most of the emoji changes were made as an accuracy update, however, there’s no mention why the Malaysia flag was updated recently.

As pointed out by others, Apple isn’t the only platform showing the flag incorrectly as an emoji. WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook Messenger have also gotten the flag wrong as well.

Hopefully, all the affected platforms will reflect the correct flag in their next emoji update.
