If you consider the naming patterns of Huawei’s current lineup of flagships—the current P-series and the Mate-series—there seems to be a flaw in the whole strategy. In early 2018, Huawei released the P11 as the P10’s successor, which seemed like the logical step at the time.
However, the following smartphone from Huawei was called the P20, before the current flagship-level P30 was released. But what will happen after the P90, or after the Mate 90 (which should be in around 6 years)? Reports have surfaced that the Chinese company has registered trademarks for the ‘P300,’ ‘P400,’ ‘P500,’ ‘P600,’ ‘P700,’ ‘P800,’ ‘P900,’ and ‘P1000’ names in the European Union and the U.K.
This would indicate that in 2025, we’ll see a P100 (although that wasn’t one of the names trademarked), and there’ll certainly be room to manoeuvre for Huawei with regards to names. There hasn’t been any news on any similarly trademarked names for the Mate series, but it’s safe to assume that Huawei might have similar plans given the parallel nature of both flagship series’ naming.
Then again, this isn’t a guarantee that Huawei will use these freshly-trademarked names for future devices. Perhaps the Chinese company is merely safeguarding their branded names from other smartphone manufacturers, or perhaps it’s simply just in case they want to use those names. We’ll have to see.
