10th Gen Intel Core processors for laptops revealed and it comes with a new numbering system

Intel has announced its latest 10th Gen Core lineup for laptops which consists of Core i3, i5 and i7, in both U and Y series. It promises to offer high-performance AI, new integrated graphics, WiFi 6 and Thunderbolt 3 on an SoC that’s manufactured on a 10nm process.

According to Intel, the latest 10th Gen series are the first purpose-built processors for AI designed for thin-and-light laptops as well as 2-in-1 convertibles. It features Intel Deep Learning Boost, a new instruction set that can accelerate neural performance on the CPU for maximum responsiveness especially in automatic image enhancements, photo indexing and photo effects.

For its higher-range processors, it utilises Intel Iris Plus graphics based on Intel’s Gen11 graphics architecture. It promises to deliver up to twice the frame rate performance for gaming in 1080p and up to 2X faster HEVC encoding with higher quality. According to Intel, these GPUs are the first from Intel to support VESA’s Adaptive Sync display standard for a smoother experience in games such as Dirt Rally 2.0 and Fortnite.

In the connectivity department, it also supports WiFi 6 which is based on the 802.11ax standard. With a compatible router, this allows you to enjoy gigabit WiFi with greater reliability. Also included is integrated support for Thunderbolt 3 up to four USB-C ports. This eliminates the need for having a separate controller.

In conjunction with the 10th gen processor, Intel has revamped its processing naming structure as well. It uses an alphanumeric scheme that highlights the generation followed by the SKU numeric digits and the level of graphics.

Unlike the previous-gen where you can easily identify the Y and the U series, you’ll now have to pay special attention to the SKU numeric digits. The U series ends with the number “5” while the Y series ends with “0” as listed above. The processors that end with G1 are using Intel’s UHD Graphics.

According to Intel, these new 10th Gen Intel Core processors will be powering new devices from PC manufacturers that will be released just in time for the holiday season. They added that these processors are just the beginning and they will be announcing additional products for the 10th Gen Intel Core mobile processor family. The upcoming products offer increased productivity and scaling which will include their Intel vPro platform.
