Singaporeans’ frustration boils over at Huawei for “telling lies”

Huawei recently announced a promotion for the Y6 Pro 2019 in Singapore—to commemorate the nation’s 54th birthday, the smartphone is available for S$54 (about RM163) this weekend to those that are aged 50 and above. But the move has backfired on them (or is any publicity good publicity?), with the uproar by frustrated customers caused by limited stocks at each store.

While each customer was allowed to buy 2 phones each, lines at selected outlets began forming at the early hours of the morning, with some outlets having customer lines forming at 4am. However, each store only had 30 units available for the promotion which drew the ire of many customers that lined up for the heavily-discounted smartphone.

Certain customers told CNA of their disappointment, after Huawei failed to disclose that there would only be a limited number of units available for the promotion. According to one customer at the Huawei outlet in VivoCity, he only found out that there was limited stock after 2 hours of lining up.

A 73-year-old woman also accused Huawei of “telling lies”, and that the Chinese company should have prepared at least “200 or 1,000 phones” at every outlet. She made the point that Huawei shouldn’t have made people queue, much less elderly folks over the age of 50.

The promotion is rather confusing, with another customer saying that the campaign is “quite misleading because they said it’s going on for three days”. With stocks unsurprisingly finishing within the first day of a 3-day campaign, how will Huawei meet the demand over the weekend?

But it’s already sold out on the first day … Strange, because the shop isn’t even open yet. Why is it sold out even before it’s open?”

Customers at Jewel Changi Airport, Vivo City, NEX and Toa Payoh Huawei outlets have since been notified by outlet staff that only 20 to 30 units were allocated to each shop. The Chinese company has also issued an apology on social media:

This is rather disappointing execution from Huawei Singapore. In contrast with that, Huawei Malaysia’s promotion campaigns such as this and this stated clearly that those promotions were only limited to a certain number of units. Malaysia boleh!

In case you’re down south in Singapore and you’d like to get involved in another Huawei campaign, another promotion which was previously scheduled to be launched on Saturday for the Huawei Mate 20 at S$568 (around RM1713), has now been put on hold. That said, they still added an important disclaimer: “while stocks last at all Challenger outlets”.
