This is how the Samsung Galaxy A80 rotates its triple-camera to the front

The Galaxy A80 is Samsung’s first smartphone to feature a “New Infinity” display that’s free from notches or punch-holes. To make it possible to offer a full edge to edge viewing experience, the Korean smartphone maker had explored a different way to solve the selfie camera conundrum. Instead of having a single pop-up selfie camera, the A80 features a unique sliding and rotating mechanism that allows the device to use its rear triple-camera setup for selfies.

According to Samsung, typically this approach would require two motors – one to handle sliding and another to rotating the camera module. Using two motors would be bulky and to make full use of the space, Samsung had developed a new solution that uses only a single motor along with a locking “teeth”, rail and hook mechanism. This would ensure that no premature rotation would occur during the sliding and rotation sequence.

When not in use, the triple-camera are facing to the back and it is fixed in the mechanism’s rack. When selfie mode is engaged, the mechanism slides up and once the module is locked into the rail, the camera piece will begin to rotate to the front and it is kept in place by the rack’s teeth.

To recap, the device comes with a 48MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 3D Depth camera that is used for live focus and live focus video mode. Samsung has also added that the A80 devices were put through a multitude of quality testing use case scenarios to ensure that users can consistently get the best camera experience possible even after extensive use.

Interestingly, Samsung didn’t provide any durability test figures. For example, the Galaxy Fold was subjected to 200,000 repeated folding tests while the Xiaomi Mi 9T’s pop-up module was tested for 300,000 times. During our usage for the review, we find that the camera module is a bit flimsy but we didn’t encounter any issues that hamper the camera experience.

The Galaxy A80 is now officially available in Malaysia with a retail price tag of RM2,499. It comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage with three colour options –  Phantom Black, Angel Gold and Ghost White.
