Galaxy A30 & A50: Samsung revamps its mid-range lineup with flagship-like features

Samsung has introduced a new mid-range smartphone lineup for 2019 with its new Galaxy A30 and A50. Similar to the recently announced Galaxy M series, the new devices offer a bigger display with a notch and it comes with a larger battery that supports fast charging.

Galaxy A30

The Galaxy A30 features a 6.4″ Super AMOLED display that pushes a Full HD+ resolution. The front looks similar to the Galaxy M30 as it has a U-shaped notch and there’s a noticeable chin at the bottom.

Underneath its “3D Glasstic” body is an Octa-Core Exynos 7904 processor. The device comes with 3GB or 4GB of RAM and has 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. It also accepts microSD card expansion up to 512GB.

The rear gets a dual-camera setup consisting a 16MP f/1.7 main camera and a 5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle shooter. The reflective glossy back also gets a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. For selfies, the notch gets a 16MP f/2.0 front camera and the device also offers Face Unlock.

Powering the Galaxy A30 is a generous 4,000mAh battery which supports 15W fast charging via USB-C. Depending on region, the Galaxy A30 is also available with Samsung Pay support via NFC. Out of the box, it runs on Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s latest One UI.

Galaxy A50

The Galaxy A50 from the front looks identical to the Galaxy A30 as it also has a 6.4” Super AMOLED Infinity-U display that pushes a Full HD+ resolution. On top of that, it gets an on-display fingerprint sensor that’s optical-based instead of ultra-sonic.

Powering the A50 is an Exynos 9610 Octa-core processor with 4GB or 6GB of RAM and it comes with 64GB or 128GB of storage. If you need more, you can still pop-in a microSD card of up to 512GB.

For taking pictures, the A50 gets a triple camera setup. It gets a main 25MP f/1.7 camera, and 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle shooter and a 5MP f/2.2 depth of field shooter. Like its flagship models, there’s also AI assisted scene optimiser. Over at the front, it gets a 25MP f/2.0 selfie camera that can capture portrait selfies with bokeh effects.

In the battery department, the Galaxy A50 is powered by a 4,000mAh capacity unit and it also supports 15W fast charging via USB-C. Out of the box it runs on Android 9 Pie with OneUI and it’s available in Black, White, Blue and Coral.

Pricing and availability

At the moment, we don’t know when it’s coming to Malaysia. However, it was rumoured that the Galaxy A30 could be priced at RM799 while the A50 is going for RM1,199. In Europe, the Galaxy A50 is selling for 349 EUR (about RM1,620) for the base 4GB RAM + 64GB storage model.

Meanwhile, the cheaper Galaxy M20 that comes with a 6.3″ Full HD+ display and a 5,000mAh battery was recently spotted on SIRIM’s database. This is an indication that it will be available in Malaysia very soon.
