Xiaomi updates the Mi MIX 3 with 5G, faster processor and a bigger battery

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 is a cool-looking flagship device that comes with a unique manual slider. When it arrived in Malaysia early this year, the hardware looks rather dated for 2019.

To keep up with the times, Xiaomi has just announced a newer version with the Mi MIX 3 5G. Apart from having a 5G modem, the updated Mi MIX 3 also receives a number of hardware upgrades.

Instead of a Snapdragon 845 processor, the Mi MIX 3 5G is powered by a top of the line 7nm based Snapdragon 855 processor. To keep things cool, the MI MIX 3 5G gets a new hybrid cooling system that uses Rogers® HeatSORB™ thermal material and a passive heatpipe that uses six layers of graphite. According to Xiaomi, this solution can disperse heat 3 times faster than a typical dual graphite sheet.

To support 5G, it also gets Qualcomm’s X50 5G modem that can deliver an insane 2Gbps peak download speeds when it’s connected to a 5G network. According to Xiaomi, this allows you to download a 15-minute 1080p video in just one second.

Another noticeable upgrade is the battery as Xiaomi has increased the capacity from 3,200mAh on the current Mi MIX 3 to 3,800mAh for the 5G version. That’s about 18.7% increase and that could translate to better battery life especially with its more efficient processor.

The rest of the hardware remains unchanged. It still has a 6.39″ Full HD+AMOLED display and it still uses ceramic materials for the back. The Mi MIX 3 5G also features the same dual 12MP main cameras with AI assistance plus a 24MP + 2MP dual-camera combo for the front.

Xiaomi didn’t reveal the RAM and storage variations for this new Mi MIX 3 variant. The 5G device will be priced from 599 Euros (about RM2,768) and it comes in Onyx Black and Sapphire Blue. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G will be available starting May this year and this is one of the first commercial 5G smartphones available for consumers. We don’t think this will come to Malaysia anytime soon since our telcos currently does not have spectrum to operate a public 5G network.
