Netflix now has a cheaper RM17/month plan

UPDATE: Netflix has reached out to us to clarify that the new mobile-only plan is offered as a test. Below is their statement in full:

We are always looking for ways to make Netflix more enjoyable and more accessible to people all over the world. In this case, we are testing to understand consumer interest in a mobile-only plan in some countries. Generally, we try out lots of new ideas at any given time, and they can vary in how long they last and who sees them. We may not ever roll out the features or elements included in a test

It was recently reported that Netflix is trying to gain more subscribers in Asia by experimenting with lower subscription plans. Now it appears that they have quietly introduced a new mobile only option in Malaysia. The best part is that it costs about half the price of its current basic plan.

If you try accessing Netflix.com on your smartphone you should be able to see a new “Mobile” plan that is priced at RM17/month.  The plan is quite similar to the Basic plan (RM33/month) where it only gets standard definition streaming (no HD) and you can only watch it on one device at a time.

Like the name suggests, this is a mobile only plan so you can’t watch this on your laptop or TV. However, you still get unlimited access to all movies and TV shows. It appears that the new entry level plan is only available for new subscribers at the moment.

The new RM17/month plan makes Netflix more accessible to the masses. However, if your whole family is hooked to it, you might as well get the Premium plan at RM51/month. That supports four simultaneous streams in Ultra HD quality. If shared among four users, it comes out to RM12.75/month per person.

If you haven’t tried Netflix yet, you can sign up to enjoy the first month for free. For those who are using iOS devices, the subscription fee is slightly cheaper on iTunes. The Netflix Premium plan is going for only RM49.90 instead of RM51/month.
