A few days ago, Samsung had changed their social profile images to a folded Samsung logo. This was an indication that a foldable Samsung smartphone could be released very soon.
Turns out that Samsung will be showcasing the device at an upcoming two-day Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco.
It isn’t clear if Samsung would have a working prototype of the device. According to Reuters’ report, detailed images of the foldable device will be shown to the public for the first time. However, the chances of the actual phone being displayed are low.
An unnamed Samsung official had also mentioned to Reuters, “Unlike our flagship products, the foldable phone is a completely new concept in terms of design and user experience, which requires a different approach.”
If you’re interested, you can watch the live stream of the event on YouTube. The feed will go live at 2:00AM on Thursday, 8 November.
The idea of a foldable smartphone has been around for a couple of years now. Samsung has the capabilities of making flexible OLED screens so there’s no doubt that they can make a foldable mobile device. The only question remains is what users can do with it?
With this showcase, Samsung hopes to expose developers to the possibilities of a larger flexible screen. Hopefully, we should see a sizeable amount of apps that’s optimised for such use cases when the device is released next year.
