UPDATE: Mi A2 is officially priced from RM999. It will be available in Malaysia from 3 August 2018.
The global launch of Xiaomi’s brand new Mi A2 smartphone was just a couple of days ago, but according to a local grey importer, the device will be available in Malaysia in the next few days. And they’re not talking about an import set.
DirectD just posted on their Facebook page that the brand new affordable Android one device from Xiaomi will hit their shelves in a couple of days. What’s more, they’re saying that these are official Malaysian sets by Xiaomi Malaysia.
According to them, there will be two storage variants to choose from: The mid-spec 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and the top-spec 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. They did not reveal any details on the base model with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.
In addition too being quite a reputable grey importer, DirectD also operates the official Mi Store (Authorised Mi Home Concept Store) in 1Utama, so there’s good reason to believe their information is solid. That said, they did not reveal the exact date to which the smartphone will go on sale or how much it will cost. Earlier, we spotted an entry on Lazada (that has since been removed) by the Xiaomi official store that priced the top-spec Mi A2 at just RM1,199 — which is a very good price tag.
We did receive an invite to a media briefing session in Malaysia that will take place at the end of this month so we’re fairly certain the device’s arrival is imminent too. Besides that, Xiaomi’s Donovan Sung also tweeted that the Mi A2 will be launching in India on the 8th of August 2018 so Malaysia’s launch could also be around that time too.
To refresh your memory, the Xiaomi Mi A2 is the Chinese company’s latest Android One device, and the successor to last year’s beloved Mi A1. The Mi A2 is a significant upgrade over the Mi A1 and features a more capable Snapdragon 660 processor and improved 12MP + 20MP dual camera system.
This handset also features a brand new aluminium unibody design, but it unfortunately does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack and has a relatively small 3,000 mAh battery. The good news is that it still charges via USB Type C and has support for Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 fast-charging technology.
