If you currently own a MacBook (12″ Retina) or a MacBook Pro and facing issues when typing, you might be able to get your keyboard fixed for free in Malaysia. Apple has announced a Keyboard Service Program for selected models and you could get it entirely replaced even if it’s out of warranty and no longer covered by AppleCare.
According to Apple, a small number of keyboards are experiencing problems of letters or characters being repeated unexpectedly or it isn’t responsive at all. This also includes the issue of keys feeling “sticky” or does not respond in a consistent manner. The Keyboard Service Program will cover the following models:
MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015)
MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016)
MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)
You can check what model you’re using by going into Apple Menu > About this Mac. After the keyboard is examined by Apple’s authorised service providers, you may be eligible for replacement of affected keys or the whole keyboard. The duration of repair will depend on the availability of parts and it is advisable that you perform a full backup before you send your MacBook in.
If you’ve already paid for a keyboard and repair replacement, you may seek for a refund from Apple. This program will cover affected MacBook and MacBook Pro models for 4 years since its first retail sale. Apple didn’t mention the cause of the issue and many believed that it’s caused by dust trapped underneath the keys.
You can find your nearest Apple Service Provider and make an appointment via the Apple Support app. For full details, you can view the Keyboard Service Program on Apple Malaysia’s official support page.
