When Xiaomi introduced its latest Mi 8 flagship series, not only it comes with a notch on the display but there’s also a “mini” version that’s called the Mi 8 SE. Apart from having a smaller screen, it’s also more affordable with the latest Snapdragon 710 chip. If you’re looking for a new compact smartphone, the Mi 8 SE is now on sale in Malaysia.
Retailer Mobile2Go has brought in imported units of the Mi 8 SE which is going for RM1,398. This is for the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage version and they currently have stocks for the Gold version. Since this isn’t an official Xiaomi Malaysia unit, it is covered by Mobile2Go’s 1-year in-house warranty.
The Mi 8 SE gets a smaller 5.88″ Full HD+ AMOLED display from Samsung that does an 18.7:9 resolution of 2244×1080 pixels. It pushes a brightness of up to 600 nits with a 60000:1 contrast ratio. According to Xiaomi, the Mi 8 SE offers a larger 5.88″ display in a footprint of a typical 5.2″ smartphone. In terms of design, the Mi 8 SE is more squarish compared to its higher performance siblings.
Instead of a Snapdragon 845 processor, the Mi 8 SE runs on a brand new 10nm based Snapdragon 710 processor. This is the first smartphone to use it and it boasts 20% better performance with 30% less power consumption over a Snapdragon 660 unit. the Mi 8 SE uses LPDDR4x RAM while its 64GB storage is an eMMC 5.1 unit instead of UFS.
For taking pictures, it also gets a 12MP f/1.9 + 5MP f/2.0 dual camera combo with AI scene detection while the front gets a 20MP selfie shooter with AI beautification features. Powering the Mi 8 SE is a 3,120mAh battery that can support Quick Charge via USB-C. As usual with Xiaomi’s new flagship series, there’s no headphone jack and microSD card expansion.
For those who prefer a flagship with a Snapdragon 845 processor, the Xiaomi Mi 8 import set is now going for RM1,998 for 64GB storage and RM2,198 for 128GB of storage.
