HP recalls laptop batteries worldwide over fire concerns

HP has just announced a worldwide voluntary safety recall for selected notebook and mobile workstation batteries. Apparently, some batteries have the possibility of overheating which will pose a fire and burn hazard to its customers.

These affects selected HP laptop models including the HP 11, Envy m6 and Pavilion x360. If you’re using an HP laptop, it is recommended that you check if your device is affected and take necessary action to minimise the risk.

According to HP’s announcement, the battery issue affects the following models that are sold between December 2015 and December 2017.

Not all laptops in the series are affected by the recall and you can check if you would need a replacement by using the HP Battery Validation Utility on their website. According to HP, the utility will take less than 30 seconds to find out.

With customer safety as a key priority, HP is providing a new BIOS update that will place the affected battery in “Battery Safety Mode”. When this mode is enabled, the battery will be discharged and it will no longer charge until the mode is disabled. This would allow customers to safely use their notebook and mobile workstations while having an HP power adaptor connected.

If you’re affected, HP says they are proactively notifying customers on the replacement. Customers would need to order a new battery that will be sent to you for free and if it’s a non-user replaceable battery, HP will arrange an authorised technician to perform the swap.
