These are Sony’s new smartphones for 2018

A new year calls for a fresh new lineup of Sony Xperia smartphones. One of it has already passed our SIRIM certification which is a sign that it could go on sale very soon. If you can’t wait, @evleaks has shared more details on three new devices which could be announced as early as next week at CES 2018.

Sony Xperia XA2/XA2 Ultra

The Sony Xperia X series has entered its 3rd year and the new Xperia XA2/XA2 Ultra retains the same “edge to edge” display on the same blocky exterior. These are Sony’s mid-range lineup and for 2018, it appears that Sony is ditching MediaTek processors for Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chips. The above pictured Xperia XA2 will come with a 5.2” Full HD display while the bigger Xperia XA2 Ultra as pictured below comes with a large 6.0” Full HD display.

The Xperia XA2 is said to come with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage, while the XA2 Ultra gets a higher spec 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. In the imaging department, the compact XA2 gets a 21MP main camera and a 7MP front-facing shooter. Meanwhile, the XA2 Ultra gets the same 21MP rear camera but the front would come with dual 15MP selfie cameras. This is the first dual-camera setup on a Xperia device.

For the first time on a mid-range Xperia XA series, Sony is finally offering 4K video recording on the XA2 and XA2 Ultra. 4K video recording was previously reserved only for its flagship XZ models. Believe it or not, the previous Sony Xperia X Performance which is powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor was only limited to Full HD video recording.

While the design looks recycled from its predecessor, the latest models now come with a fingerprint sensor mounted at the rear. Instead of a large flat button at the sides, the power button is now replaced with a circular silver design which was first introduced on the 2013 Xperia Z.

Sony Xperia L2

Moving down to the entry-level model is the Xperia L2. It is said to retain the same 5.2” HD 720p display but the rest of its hardware details are not known at the moment. Unlike the Xperia XA/XA2, it will still run on Android Nougat instead of Android 8.0 Oreo.

If you’re looking for a fresh redesign, you won’t find it on their new entry to mid-range models. Hopefully, we might see that on their upcoming flagship models. Word has it that Sony might be introducing a 18:9 smartphone that would feature a fresh bezel-less design. Rumoured to launch at MWC 2018, the new flagship is expected to come with a 4K display and it would run on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 processor.
