The Meizu M6 Note is a good old fashioned value-for-money smartphone

Meizu‘s rounding out their 2017 in Malaysia with a pair of new mid-range smartphones that stick to good-old-fashioned value for money. No 18:9 screens or fancy gimmicks…well, one fancy gimmick, but for the most part it’s a pretty cookie cutter bang-for-buck handset.

Meet the Meizu M6 and M6 Note.

The highlight smartphone is of course the more capable M6 Note. It’s got a 5.5″ Full HD LTPS display that pushes a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. Inside, it’s powered by a 14nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor clocked at 2GHz. Paired to that you’ll find 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

At the back of this handset you’ll find a dual-camera setup. One is the primary 12MP shooter with an f/2.0 aperture lens while the secondary camera sports 5 megapixels. This allows the handset to take “portrait mode” photos where the subject is in focus while the background is blurred. In front, you’ll be greeted with an 16MP f/2.0 selfie camera — perfect for your budding career as a social media influencer.

Its main camera was surprisingly impressive for a budget smartphone. It features Dual PDAF auto-focusing which makes focusing really quick and makes the whole camera feel snappy. Resulting images looked pretty good on the display but I will save my final judgement after a full review.

The internals of this handset is wrapped up in a nice metal body that has a matte finish and can be quite the fingerprint magnet. Still, the handset’s build feels solid and fairly premium so I doubt many will complain. Tucked in that shell is a large 4,000 mAh battery that should mean some stellar battery life when paired with its frugal processor.

Meizu’s new mid-ranger will run on Android 7.1.2 Nougat with the company’s Flyme 6 skin on top. Unfortunately, the handset still ships with a micro USB port which to me is a significant step back but could be good news for those looking to upgrade but have a tonne of legacy cables.

Besides the M6 Note, Meizu also launched a smaller handset called the M6. This smartphone is considerably watered down, trading the 5.5″ FHD display for a 5.2″ HD panel pushing 1280×720 pixels instead. Inside, it is powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6750 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. Thankfully, the smartphone keeps the memory configuration the same at 3GB RAM plus 32GB storage.

It also gets a smaller 3,070 mAh battery, it runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with Flyme 6 on top. For photos, you get a 13MP f/2.2 aperture main camera with an 8MP f/2.0 selfie shooter.

The Meizu M6 Note is priced at RM899 while the M6 will retail for RM599.

Besides these two new phones, Meizu also slashed the price of the Pro 7 from RM1,899 to RM1,499 while the Pro 7 Plus gets a price cut from RM2,799 to RM2,399.
