OPPO F5 revealed with a 20MP AI assisted selfie camera

The OPPO F5 is officially announced and it is their first 18:9 display smartphone with a new 20MP selfie camera. The new selfie-expert device was announced in the Philippines yesterday and it will be coming to Malaysia next week on 2 November.

As expected, the OPPO F5 comes with a 6.0″ FullHD+ display that pushes a 2160×1080 pixels resolution. Since the taller 18:9 screen dominates the entire front, the fingerprint sensor is now moved to the rear with an oblong shape. Similar to its latest models, the F5 comes in a sleek full metal unibody design with curved antenna lines at the top and bottom.

For taking selfies, the F5 comes with a 20MP f/2.0 front camera that comes with its own AI beautification feature. According to OPPO, this brings out your photogenic best no matter your age, gender, skin tone and skin type. They added that their facial feature optimisation will accentuate your facial landmarks and contours to create a perfectly refined and natural selfie. Despite just having one camera, you can also add bokeh effects to your shots.

Over at the rear, it gets a 16MP f/1.8 main camera but there’s no mention if it has OIS or faster dual-PDAF focusing technology.

OPPO seems to be pushing their facial unlock as a new feature on the F5. They are not positioning this as a replacement of the fingerprint sensor but rather as an alternative when your hands are wet. On their product page, there’s also a line print that says facial recognition is less secure than a fingerprint, pattern code or digital passcode.

Powering the OPPO F5 is a 16nm MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763T) processor that’s mated to either 4GB or 6GB of RAM. In the Philippines, there are 2 variants – a 4GB RAM + 32GB storage model or a 6GB RAM + 64GB storage option. The 4GB version comes in Gold and Black while the 6GB version only comes in Red.

Storage is expandable via microSD and the OPPO F5 comes with a dedicated microSD slot. This allows you to add more storage while using two nano-SIMs at the same time. Out of the box, it runs on ColorOS 3.2 that’s based on Android 7.1. The OPPO F5 comes with a 3,200mAh battery and unfortunately, there’s no mention of their VOOC fast charging.

In the Philippines, the 4GB RAM + 32GB storage model is priced at PHP 15,990 (about RM1,308) and it will be available for pre-order starting today until 3 November. As a pre-order bonus, customers will be getting a free Olike speaker worth PHP 2,990 (about RM244).

The OPPO F5 Malaysian launch is happening next week and it appears that we could be getting a total of 3 models. So which new selfie-centric phone with 18:9 display would you go for? OPPO F5, Huawei Nova 2i or vivo V7+? Let us know in the comments below.
