After the Mi A1, here’s another Android One smartphone with dual cameras

Android One is an initiative by Google to deliver affordable Android devices at a lower sub-US$100 prices. When Xiaomi announced the Mi A1, it was not only their first smartphone with a stock Android experience, but it’s also the highest spec Android One device that comes with two cameras at the rear.

According to Google, they are expanding the Android One experience with more devices at different price points. Now it looks like a new one is coming soon with better specs and premium build than the A1.

Based on the latest leak from @evleaks, it appears that Motorola will be releasing an Android One device that’s based on their new Moto X4. Everything looks similar including a dual camera setup at the rear but you’ll notice a visible AndroidOne printed right at the bottom. Since the Xiaomi Mi A1 is based off its China exclusive Mi 5X, we reckon Motorola might use a different model name for this AndroidOne version.

To recap on the specs, the Moto X4 has a 5.2″ Full HD IPS display and it runs on a newer Snapdragon 630 processor that comes with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM. On-board it has 32GB of storage which is expandable via microSD.

Design wise, it looks more premium with its dual curved back design and the X4 also comes with IP68 water and dust resistance. However, Motorola stresses that it isn’t a waterproof device.

For imaging, it gets a main 12MP f/2.0 camera with dual autofocus pixels while the second unit is an 8MP f/2.2 camera that offers an ultra-wide angle lens. Over at the front, it has a 16MP f/2.0 camera for selfies which can adapt itself by merging pixels for better low light performance. The Moto X4 gets a 3,000mAh battery which also charges via USB Type-C.

Moto X4

Since the Moto X4 like any new Moto devices are pretty much stock Android, it would be interesting to see what difference would this AndroidOne version make. You’ll probably lose out on the Moto Experiences such as hand gestures and on-screen notifications without waking the device, and… that’s pretty much it. In terms of pricing, the Moto X4 is going for 399 Euro (about RM2,028) which is almost double the price of the Mi A1 if we convert directly.

Perhaps, Motorola might price the Android One variant lower and it would sold at selected markets where the full fledged Moto X4 isn’t available. If the Moto X4 “Android One” edition comes to Malaysia, how much do you think it will cost? Do check out our hands-on and first impressions of the Mi A1 if you haven’t already.
