Malaysia lifts blockade on Steam

Yesterday evening, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had blocked Steam’s website access on our local service providers. After complying with the Malaysian authority’s request to remove the controversial game, the MCMC has finally lifted the ban this morning and Malaysians should be able to access the software distribution platform by now.

At the moment, it appears that the Steam website is accessible on TM Unifi but not all mobile networks yet. In our quick check, we couldn’t access the page on Maxis but it works just fine on Celcom and U Mobile. It would probably take a while for it to go back to normal for everyone.

The reason behind the platform ban is due to “Fight of Gods” which is deemed unsuitable for Malaysian viewers. They have given Steam a 24-hour ultimatum to restrict the game’s availability for Malaysian users but unfortunately, it wasn’t removed until the site was blocked. A few hours later, Steam finally complied with MCMC’s demands.

During the period, Malaysians can’t access the website but for those who already have the app can still use it to download new games. Fortunately, there’s a way to bypass the blockade by switching your DNS.
