Petronas lets you shop and pay for petrol with Samsung Pay

Petronas is first oil and gas company in Malaysia to introduce Samsung Pay contactless payment throughout its 1,000 petrol stations nationwide. This offers customers a safe and convenient way to make payment using your smartphone.

You must be thinking, aren’t smartphones not allowed near a fuel pump? Probably for that reason, all payments must be made at the counter inside the Kedai Mesra convenience store. To entice more people to use Samsung Pay, Petronas will be running an 8-week campaign where users can stand a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy S8 and a RM150 gift card.

At the moment, Samsung Pay is supported on selected models which include Samsung Galaxy Note5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy A9 Pro, Galaxy S8/S8+, Galaxy S7/S7 edge and Galaxy A5/A7 (2016/2017). For Malaysia, it currently supports cards from CIMB (Mastercard), Citi (Mastercard/Visa), Maybank (Visa), RHB (Mastercard/Visa) and Standard Chartered (Mastercard/Visa). You can learn more at their official page.

Overall, it is a nice option to have especially if you’ve forgotten to bring your wallet. If you’re just paying for fuel, it is still faster to pay by card at the pump. Perhaps one day Petronas or other petrol companies may offer an in-app payment option similar to ExxonMobil in the US. The app lets you pre-authorise the pump you’re parked next to via Samsung Pay before you step out to start fueling.
