The LG G6 gets refreshed with several new features

The LG G6 is a huge upgrade over its underwhelming LG G5. However, with more flagships hitting the shelves like the Galaxy S8, HTC U11 and Xperia XZ Premium, LG knows it needs to do something to freshen up its top-tier smartphone offering. And here it is, the LG G6+.

Don’t be fooled by the name, the “plus” isn’t a larger G6 but rather an updated version with more features. RAM is bumped up to 6GB is still retained at 4GB while storage is now doubled to 128GB.

For better audio enjoyment, the LG G6+ comes bundled with a pair of premium earphones from B&O Play which takes full advantage of its 32-bit HiFi Quad DAC. Unfortunately, that’s where the new hardware features end.

The rest of the device remains unchanged with a 5.7″ QuadHD+ display and it still runs on last year’s Snapdragon 821 processor. You get the same dual-camera set up at the rear and a 3,300mAh battery which supports Quick Charge.

However, they are also introducing several new software features which will be available for both the LG G6 and G6+. This includes a Face Print security option which allows you to unlock your phone by holding up the device in front of your face without pressing any buttons. Unlocking this way is said to take less than a second and the front camera is only activated when you raise your phone up. Of course, we are not sure if this is easily fooled with the old photo trick.

Another new update is for its wide angle camera. Its new “Covered Lens” warning will let you know if a finger (or fingers) is blocking the lens before you hit the shutter button. This allows you to take your wide angle photos without any unintentional fingers in the frame. To stretch its battery life further, the new software update also comes with a Low Power Consumption feature that is already built into Qualcomm’s Hexagon DSP in its Snapdragon platform.

LG is also introducing two new colours for the G6 range with Optical Marine Blue and Optical Terra Gold which comes with a lenticular film for a “mesmeric optical effect”. Meanwhile, at the front, the G6 will feature an all black appearance which creates a better “borderless” illusion for its Full Vision Display.

So far there are no details of its international roll out for the LG G6+. The LG G6 had recently gotten a price cut in Malaysia and it is currently going for RM2,599.
