You might need to wait until year end to receive your TM Unifi speed upgrade

If you’re a TM Unifi subscriber and have yet to received your “surprise” yet, you’re not alone. According to TM’s deputy CEO Datuk Bazlan Osman, the broadband speed upgrade will be done in phases according to network availability and they aim to double the Internet speeds for all UniFi customers by the end of this year.

According to a report by TheStar, only 22% or 640,000 TM Unifi subscribers have been upgraded so far. As announced in January this year, a majority of TM customers will be getting double their current speeds with no increase on their subscription fee. This is in line with the government’s call to increase our broadband speeds during the Budget 2017 announcement.

Initially, it was mentioned on the TM Surprise page that the free speed upgrade will be implemented in stages between January to June 2017.

Touching on their mobile arm, Webe, TM says they are still investing heavily on their network. So far they have converted 2% of its 2.66 million customers as webe users and they aim to increase this to 8-10% very soon. In the first two months in 2017, TM claims to have expanded their 4G LTE network with over 6,000 sites which would cover 60% of the population. For places without webe coverage, customers can fall back on their domestic roaming partner, Celcom, which TM claims to provides almost full coverage nationwide.

Despite being a new mobile service provider, webe has plans to roll out a high capacity network via 3 carrier aggregation. This would utilise their current 850MHz FDD-LTE band together with 10MHz + 20MHz blocks on 2.3GHz TD-LTE. In theory, this could deliver speeds up to 300Mbps.
