UPDATE: Samsung Galaxy S8 is officially priced from RM3,299 in Malaysia. Pre-order details here.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be available for pre-order in Malaysia beginning 11 April 2017. Apart from Samsung Malaysia, you can also pre-order a unit contract-free from SenHeng on the same day at 10:00 AM.
Pricing for the new flagship duo hasn’t been revealed yet but we do know that it would come only in 3 colours – Midnight Black, Orchid Gray and Maple Gold. To recap on the device, the Galaxy S8 comes with a 5.8″ dual-curved Quad HD display and a 3,000mAh battery, while the S8+ comes with a bigger 6.2″ display and a larger 3,500mAh battery. Apart from the screen and battery sizes, both phones are identical under the hood. It runs on a 10nm Exynos 8895 processor (or Snapdragon 835 in selected markets) that’s mated to 4GB of RAM and it comes with 64GB of on-board storage.
For optics, the main camera is identical to the S7 edge with a 12MP f/1.7 dual-pixel camera but the front gets an upgraded 8MP f/1.7 selfie shooter that comes with auto focus. The main focus for the S8 is the display and as a result, they have removed its iconic home button in favour for on-screen virtual keys and had moved its fingerprint sensor to the rear. With an 18.5:9 display aspect ratio, the Galaxy S8 feels much narrower despite having a larger screen and it’s also optimised to show cinematic content without the typical black borders. The Galaxy S8 is also a dual-SIM device and it supports microSD expansion on its hybrid tray design.
The device charges quickly via USB Type-C and it also supports wireless charging using both PMA and WPC standards. Out of the box, it runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung’s latest iteration of TouchWiz. You can find out what we think of the Galaxy S8 in our hands-on and first impressions.
Apart from Senheng, we expect more retailers and even telco partners to offer pre-orders as early as next week. The global release for the Galaxy S8 is on 21 April 2017 and we expect the Malaysian rollout to start shortly after that.
