This post is brought to you by the Huawei Mate 9
Huawei’s Mate 9 made an enormous splash when it was announced in Munich last year. The handset was a stunning combination of brilliant hardware with incredible software built on top of the Android platform. Here are 5 awesome features of the Huawei Mate 9.
Easily one of the best features on Huawei’s Mate line of devices is their incredible battery life due to high efficiency and low power consumption. With the Mate 9 Huawei improves on that further. Not only do you get the massive 4,000 mAh battery that gives you all-day battery, Huawei has also employed a new fast-charging technology called Huawei SuperCharge.
This fast-charging standard utilises a unique variable 4.5V/5A or 5V/4.5A current to charge the device super quickly, giving you a 58% charge in just 30 minutes. Huawei has also built in a 5-gate protection system that uses low voltages, when you’re charging the phone it doesn’t generate a lot of heat, keeping the whole system much cooler than it would otherwise be with regular fast-charging technology. With it, you’ll be getting much safer charging temperatures so your mind can be at ease when you hook it up to the power source.
Early last year, Huawei did something nobody thought they would — they formed a partnership with legendary German camera-maker Leica to bring the German’s expertise to the mobile. With the Mate 9, the Huawei-Leica partnership takes things to the next level with a new 20MP/12MP dual-camera setup.
As usual, one sensor shoots in monochrome while the other shoots in RGB. However, instead of the usual 12-megapixel pair, Huawei ups the megapixels on the monochrome sensor to 20 so it can capture even more detail than before. Further, this camera system also sports dual-lens optical image stabilisation and the industry’s first dual-camera binning technology. This high-resolution camera also allows the Mate 9 to employ Hybrid Zoom technology where the handset uses both cameras to produce crisp images even at 2x digital zoom.
On a smartphone camera, perhaps one of the most important features to have is snappiness and speed when focusing. With that in mind, Huawei has employed a 4-1 Hybrid autofocusing system that utilises laser AF, PDAF, depth focus and contrast focus for those instantaneous snaps.
But that’s not all they’ve done. Huawei has also included a special “Bokeh Effect” mode that gives smooth blurred out backgrounds for good subject separation and depth of field. They’ve also employed a “capture first then refocus” feature that lets you choose the focal point after you’ve taken a picture. This is thanks to Huawei’s sophisticated algorithm that is able to distinguish the distances of the main object that the photographer wants to focus.

As people consume more and more media on their smartphones, having a capable set of speakers built into your device is almost a necessity. However, adding a powerful pair of front-facing stereo speakers often results in unsightly chins and foreheads on the front of the device.
So, instead of doing that, Huawei instead employs a speaker setup where the phone will utilise its earpiece as a second speaker. When you play music on your Mate 9, the main speaker the bottom will output lower frequency sounds while the earpiece speaker handles the high frequency sounds. This gives the phone’s speaker a unique tweeter and woofer effect when you’re watching videos or playing music. When the phone is in landscape, the Mate 9’s Smart PA Stereo Effect converts the audio to create a left and right stereo effect instead.
With this setup, it allows Huawei to keep the phone sleek and elegant without compromising on audio quality.
Huawei has accomplished this Smart PA Stereo Effect by building the Mate 9 with a high-performance Hi6403 audio chip which results in a significant improvement in audio quality compared to the previous generation.
Huawei’s Mate 9 comes with an excellent fingerprint scanner. So that the phone is always ready when you pull it out of your pocket, Huawei has placed the fingerprint scanner at the back of the device. This position is ideal for users who want immediate access to their device without fumbling about to unlock it.
What’s more the Mate 9’s new fingerprint scanner has 4 levels of fingerprint recognition including a 3D fingerprint recognition technology. This allows the scanner to scan the 3D ridges of your fingerprint for a more accurate unlocking experience even when your finger is a little damp or dirty. This boosts the performance of the fingerprint scanner so it’s 20% faster than the Mate 8.
Besides that, the Mate 9’s fingerprint scanner is also multifunctional so you can tap it to take a photo, answer a call, stop an alarm, show notifications, navigate photo albums and your gallery.
Next, is a feature that you’ll spend most of your time looking at and using — Huawei’s excellent EMUI 5.0. The company has completely revamped their Android skin and it’s pretty awesome. If you’re an android purist, you’ll be happy to know that the new EMUI is closer to stock than it ever has in the past.
First up, it’s built on top of Android 7.0 Nougat — the first smartphone to launch in Malaysia with Android’s latest iteration. With this, you get a a lot of new features, including Nougat’s new notifications tray, the option to include an App drawer and a revamped settings menu that Huawei has worked hard to optimise so you can get to almost all your key settings with just two taps.
Besides that, Huawei has also included a bunch of new features like Knuckle Sense, a gesture control that uses your knuckles; and App Twin, that lets you have two of the same apps installed at the same time. With App Twin, users can keep their personal and business lives separate by logging in to two different apps with two different accounts.
EMUI 5.0 also brings a plethora of memory and storage optimisations. Huawei has developed a fast-memory recycling mechanism that’s combined with an exclusive memory compression technology to boost performance. In real-world situations, this translates to the phone being able to automatically clean memory in the background so users won’t have to do it themselves manually.
As a whole, Huawei’s Mate 9 is a stunning smartphone. It’s got all the power you’ll ever need in a handset and the intelligence to keep the device running super smooth as well. What are you waiting for? Pick up your very own Huawei Mate 9 for RM2,699 at all authorised Huawei retailers nationwide.
