Huawei Malaysia plans to bring the Watch 2 later this year

During the launch of the P10 series, Huawei Malaysia has also showcased its new Huawei Watch 2. Powered by the latest Android Wear 2.0, it supports standalone apps, Google Assistant and customisable watch faces.

Similar to Samsung’s Gear S3 smartwatch, the new Huawei Watch looks chunkier with a rugged look. The standard Watch 2 is more sporty looking with its removable rubber strap that comes in a range of striking colours. Meanwhile, the Watch 2 classic gets a more contemporary design with a leather strap. Both have two buttons at the sides and a bezel which unfortunately isn’t rotatable.

Compared to the original Huawei Watch, the new one has a smaller 1.2″ AMOLED display with a 390×390 pixels resolution. You get a whole lot of connectivity and sensors with 4G LTE support, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Barometer, 3-axis Gyroscope, NFC, speakerphone and a heart rate sensor built-in. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and both models do get IP68-rated dust and water resistance.

The new Watch 2 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor with 768MB of RAM and it has 4GB of storage. On board, it gets a 420mAh battery that can last up to 2 days with normal use but you can extend it up to 25 days on a single charge with its basic watch mode with step tracking. Since it runs on Android Wear, it will work with both Android and iOS smartphones.

When we asked about availability, Huawei Malaysia couldn’t provide an exact date but they could be offering it sometime later this year. To stay competitive, expect the Huawei Watch 2 to be more affordable than its first version. The first gen Huawei Watch was priced between RM1,799 for the standard stainless steel case and up to RM2,299 for the premium Jewel edition with Swarovski Zirconia stones. If they do bring it here, Huawei is likely to offer the 4G LTE version and they are currently looking for potential partners to make that possible.
