As LG looks poised to launch their upcoming flagship, the G6, at the end of next month, a new report from Forbes just dropped that sheds some light what might be disappointing for LG fans to hear: The LG G6 will allegedly not come with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor and here’s why.
According to the article on Forbes, the author’s source, who is identified only as an “industry insider”, states that the reason why LG’s new flagship can’t ship with a Snapdragon 835 is because Samsung “has first dibs”. Yup, apparently Qualcomm’s latest won’t be “available in large quantities until after the Galaxy S8 launches”.
This will probably irk some LG fans especially considering the rivalry the two South Korean companies have. But let’s not get caught up with on-paper specs. The real question is: Does it matter that LG isn’t using the Snapdragon 835?
According to Forbes’ insider, the LG G6 will instead come packing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor — the same one that HTC’s new U Ultra flagship smartphones ship with. It’s also the same processor as the one in the Google Pixel and the OnePlus 3T, just to name a few. Looking at the list, I doubt many will have a problem with how these devices perform as smartphones because the Snapdragon 821 is a very capable processor.
I think it’s more about software optimisation than raw power. If LG knows how to optimise its software properly, the device will almost certainly perform as well as the other 2017 flagships in daily usage.
That said, Qualcomm’s new 835 chip does come with several improvements over the older 821 series beyond performance like Quick Charge 4.0 and a more efficient 10nm process, among others.
