Can Lenovo’s Miix 720 take on Microsoft’s Surface Pro?

Lenovo’s stepping up their 2-in-1 tablet game with the new Miix 720. I know this seems like an overused term but this new tablet is definitely looking like a proper Surface killer.

This update to Lenovo’s Miix 700 kicks things off with an updated CPU. According to Anandtech and PhoneArena, Lenovo’s new device will feature 15W 7th Generation Intel Kaby Lake processors. While the exact model number isn’t stated, the good news is that it’s a bump up from the Miix 700’s Core m7 chips. Since it’s a 15W processor, it wouldn’t be unrealistic to expect up to an Intel Core i7-7500U chip inside instead of the new generation Y-series processors.

Besides that, the new Miix 720 also comes with up to 16GB of DDR4 memory and up to 1TB of PCIe storage. All of this is packed into a body that’s the same size and weight as the tablet it succeeds.

For the display, Lenovo’s also included a high-resolution 12-inch 2880×1920 pixel (3:2 aspect ratio) display which has a ppi of 288. That’s much higher than the 214 ppi display of its predecessor and even a little higher than the 267 ppi Microsoft Surface Pro 4.  Lenovo rates the display’s brightness at 400 nits.

As far as I/O is concerned, the Miix 720 will feature three USB Ports, which in a world filled with single and dual USB-port computers, is pretty great. The ports are comprised of a USB 3.1 Type-C port, a USB 3.0 port and a USB 2.0 port. The tablet will also come with a Thunderbolt 3 port.

Other features include support for Windows Hello facial recognition through an infrared camera. However, there is no fingerprint included. The Miix 720’s kickstand is propped open by Lenovo’s excellent watchband hinge for up to 150-degrees of adjustment. Battery life has also been rated at up to 8 hours.

This new 2-in-1 tablet will be priced at USD999.99 (about RM4,492) and will be available beginning April 2017. It will come in two colours — Champagne and Iron Gray — and Lenovo will also include a fully backlit keyboard with the price. The Active Pen 2, however, will be included (or not) depending on region.
