The midrange smartphone market is an incredibly competitive one. Good value and a nice build isn’t really enough to let you stand out from the crowd anymore. You need a trick up your sleeve — a trump card.

And Sharp’s M1 has exactly that.

Sharp’s new M1 smartphone is tailored for the selfie generation. While many of us want to take high quality selfie photos, not everyone can afford to splurge on an expensive selfie-centric camera. Instead, a large majority of these photos are taken with our smartphone’s front-facing camera — a camera that’s usually a little neglected by manufacturers.

Well, Sharp hasn’t neglected the front-facing unit on the M1. In fact, they’ve pulled out all the stops to include a 13-megapixel selfie snapper with facial autofocus for detailed selfies all day, every day. What’s more, you can also tap to focus on different elements in the scene like you would with a typical smartphone’s rear camera. Besides that, the front camera also comes with gesture controls that let you take a photo with a simple “peace sign”

Although the front camera is impressive, this isn’t just a one-trick-pony. Sharp’s M1 is also a pretty capable handset in its own right. In front, it’s got a 5.5-inch Full HD display while a MediaTek MT6753 processor and 3GB of RAM live on the inside. To make sure you have enough storage for all your selfie photos, Sharp has bundled the smartphone with 64GB of internal storage, storage that you can also further expand with a microSD card. Keeping everything running is a 2,600 mAh battery.

On the software department, the Sharp M1 comes with Android Marshmallow out of the box with the company’s own Android skin on top. This skin features an interesting way to navigate your screens because it lets you swipe both vertically and horizontally to view your applications.

What’s more, the Sharp M1 also features a premium build quality with a nice slab of curved glass on the back that seamlessly blends into its metal frame. This build is something you’d find on a smartphone much higher up the price bracket, so it’s great that Sharp managed to let you experience it on the M1 too.

You’ll also find a 13-megapixel primary camera at the back with a dedicated flash unit to help with low-light scenes. This unit also comes with a zero shutter delay mode that lets you fire off photos without any delay. Have a fleeting moment you want to capture? Just leave this on and you’re golden.

Sharp’s got a formidable selfie-centric smartphone on their hands with the M1. Not only is it a capable smartphone, it’s also got a high-megapixel front-camera to satisfy all your selfie needs. How much does all of this cost? RM899. Yup, you get all that for below RM900.
