Besides the launch of the new Mi Note 2 and the cool concept Mi MIX, Xiaomi also unveiled their brand new VR headset called the Mi VR. It’s an update to their previous model and it comes with a bunch of new stuff.

The first thing you’d notice with the Mi VR is that it looks a lot like the PlayStation VR headset. This is because the band works like the PS VR where it sits on your head rather being strapped around your face. This should mean that the new headset is more comfortable than the previous one.

As far as tech is concerned, the Mi VR isn’t a standalone VR headset because it will still require a smartphone to act as a screen. However, Xiaomi says that they’ve designed the Mi VR to work specifically with smartphones running the Snapdragon 820/821 processors. Xiaomi says that the Mi VR will be compatible with the Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus and Mi Note 2. But, they also say that it will work with other high-end smartphones.

Still, that doesn’t mean that the Mi VR is just a plastic shell. Xiaomi has also built in a high-sensitivity anti-vertigo motion sensor that they say only has an input lag of 16ms.

The headset also comes with a 9-axis inertial remote that’s very similar to what Google created for their Daydream View headset. It is touch-sensitive and can be used to play games and point in virtual reality too.

Xiaomi also developed a software interface for the VR headset called MIUI VR. It’s basically a menu system that’s similar to Google’s Daydream menu.

The cost of all this? RMB199 which is around RM122. Unfortunately, there is no information on whether this will reach Malaysia or not.
