Virtual Reality (VR) is great. It’s a great leap in the way we consume our content. However, the problem with the VR experience right now is that you can’t really touch and feel objects in the virtual space and that takes a lot away from the immersion.
Now, though, it looks like Dexta Robotics may have the solution to our problems. Meet Dexmo, an exoskeleton designed to help you feel in the virtual space.
Developed by Dexta Robotics, Dexmo is, in essence, a really fancy glove that can help simulate how an object would feel in virtual space. It does this by tracking 11 degrees of motion and can offer variable force feedback for each finger.
Essentially, the glove pulls back on your hands as you grip something, making it feel like you’re actually holding on to something real in virtual reality. That way, it can give you different pressures and resistances depending on the type of object you hold on to in VR. A rubber duck, for example, would have less resistance than a rock.
In my head, I’m already picturing all the possibilities for this kind of technology could bring to VR gaming. You could “hold” a gun in VR, pick up weapons, items and so much more! This is a kind of experience you simply don’t have access to right now because even something as sophisticated as HTC’s Vive still uses remotes.
Dexta Robotics says that the glove is lightweight and can run wirelessly for a long time, but there’s not much information beyond that. There is no price or date for when we, normal human beings, can go out and buy it.
Despite the fact that it looks like there’s still a long way to go before this thing can hit the mass market, just the fact that something like this exists is enough to get me excited for the future of VR gaming.
